Types of Lighting you should know about

Posted on 1st October 2021

You may think that changing the lighting in your home is difficult and won’t have that much impact on the space but this couldn’t be further from the truth. There are plenty of different options to change the lighting in your home to suit whatever budget. Read on to see how changing up the lighting in your home can not only be easy, but also creative! The following options can elevate your surroundings and set the mood no matter the occasion.

Recessed fixtures

A recessed light or downlight is a light fixture that is installed into a hollow opening in a ceiling. This has become increasingly popular over the last few years and for good reason – it is easy to combine with other types of lighting to create a layered look. Recessed lighting can be hard to get right if you don’t know what you’re doing so we would suggest seeking a professional electricians help. Although this does push up the costs we think the final look is totally worth it.

Track Lighting

Track lights mount to and protrude from your ceiling. They point directly downward, so you can use them to illuminate hallways or the very centre of a room. Often the lights can be rotated on the track so the light can be directed to certain points of a room or targeted specifically at something for example at an armchair in the corner of the room. Lots of scope for creativity with this type of lighting.

Pendants

Pendants come in all colours, shapes and sizes that can blend in seamlessly to any home no matter what your home décor. They are often used in multiples and recently it has become popular to hang them in a straight line and hung over things for example kitchen countertops or dining tables. These can easily be installed with small hooks into the ceiling.

Wall Sconces

Wall sconces extend from your wall to illuminate hallways or side tables. We recommend using this type of lighting above bedroom side tables to give a cosy ambience. We would recommend an electrician fitting these as they are wall mounted however if you were on a budget, we would suggest purchasing plug in wall sconces. As long as you hide the wires well no one would notice they aren’t a permanent fixture.

 Task Lighting

Often task lighting refers to increasing illuminance to better accomplish a specific activity. Lamps and other small fixtures can be used to accomplish this effect. For example a tall lamp over an armchair for reading or a smaller lamp on a desk for working. Having these smaller light fixtures can help add dimension to the room.

Accent Lighting

Need a quick way to make your favourite furniture piece appear brighter and stand out more or wish to illuminate a painting? You’re looking for accent lighting. Install a fixture directly above to illuminate and draw attention to it. Accent lighting can help to emphasize all your rooms best traits.

There are endless possibilities with lighting to help change and create different ambiances within a space. If you are on a real budget we would suggest simply swapping out your old bulbs for LED dimmer bulbs and even colour changing bulbs. This way you can easily switch up the lighting depending on the mood without the need to purchase multiple different fixtures and fittings.
